The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of heritable connective tissues disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility and tissue fragility. There are 13 genetic sub-types and one for which a genetic basis has not been found (hEDS). Chiropractors are uniquely positioned to play a role in identifying and managing EDS, and should also be aware of specific precautions to take with this patient population.
Being able to recognize, assess, treat, and refer for multidisciplinary care is imperative for best patient outcomes. Review of EDS classifications, diagnosis, imaging, and comorbidities will be addressed to help with proper treatment plans.
