Dr. Donald Murphy and Dr. Geoffrey Bove are New England chiropractors who spun their clinical observations into highly productive parallel careers in research. This spring, for the first time, they will combine their expansive knowledge of spine-related pain and dysfunction, from neurophysiology to biomechanics and from basic science to clinical application. Learn to apply Clinical Reasoning in Spine Pain® (CRISP®) in a busy clinical environment!

Dr. Murphy combines patient care with clinical research and teaching in both Chiropractic and Medicine. He serves as a Primary Spine Practitioner at Brown University Health as well as Assistant Professor at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. When Dr. Murphy became a chiropractor, he noted that classes taught a bunch of examination procedures, and a bunch of treatment strategies, but never connected the dots on how to connect that information for the best patient outcomes. He is well known for his books “Clinical Reasoning in Spine Pain,” which outline a flexible, individualized approach to acute and chronic spine conditions. He says that “Murphy’s Law” means that the better outcomes you get with your spine patients, the more local medical offices send you every type of patient imaginable. He has taught all manner of students for NY Chiropractic College, Brown University, and University of Pittsburgh, as well as speaking globally.

When Dr. Bove graduated from chiropractic school, the neurobiology of chiropractic was still in its infancy. This motivated him to take his clinical observations into the lab to investigate central chiropractic theories. He dove in hard, completing a PhD in neurobiology and anatomy from UNC-Chapel Hill. He developed his own NIH-funded laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, and remains the only chiropractor to have been faculty at Harvard Medical School. After 25 years in academia, he moved his laboratory into his home, while still funded by NIH. His research has defined the effects of inflammation on nerves and axons, and has provided the first evidence that manual therapy can influence key pathophysiologies due to overuse injuries.

Dr. Murphy is brought to us courtesy of Spine Care Partners.
